Mobiles in a crisis

20 August 2008

Using mobiles to respond to emergencies can bring help as quickly as possible, but it is important that you know what to dial. While 000 is the emergency number in Australia, it is possible that you may need to make an emergency call while overseas. Learning the emergency number to dial is very important before you travel, but sometimes people will plan side trips on the fly and forget to research such vital information.

Luckily, there is an emergency number that is more or less worldwide - 112. This has limitations, though, so be sure to do your very best to find out the emergency number of the region you will be visiting.

112 is a standard emergency number in all European Union member states. It is also built in to GSM mobiles and GSM networks in order to redirect to the emergency services of the country you are within. Unfortunately, CDMA mobiles are unlikely to have the same functionality, as the 112 service is not a part of their standard. There are a few CDMA mobiles that can access the 112 service, but it is best not to rely on this.
